• Joe’s Story

    Joe starts keeping his journal from January 1914 and in it he records his daily life, including meeting Rose in February 1914. Joe is very interested in national and international events and by reading his journal you will be able to discover more about the history of this period.

    Joe joins up in September 1914 and his ongoing journal will record his experiences and include the stories of his siblings and friends as they undertake different roles in various services, both civilian and military.

    Joe’s journal also follows the course of his relationship with Rose and how they kept in contact with each other through postcards.

    As you look from left to right you are meeting Ernie, serving in the Royal Navy, who is married to Joe’s eldest sister Sarah. Sarah is holding Samuel, their son, who is going to be two in 1914.Standing next to Sarah is Edwin who is Joe’s father with Grace by his side who is Joe’s mother.

    Joe is depicted wearing the clothes he wears at work in Mr. Sammy’s greengrocery shop. To the right of Joe is William, who is just about to leave school and to the far right is Florence who works in a hotel.
